A Closer Look At Properly Shipping Beverages

By May 26, 2015 No Comments

The nation consumes a tremendous amount of beverages, and that amount is constantly growing. From fruit juice to soft drinks to beer or wine, shipping beverages and getting them to their destination in good shape is important. And while the packaging of these drinks means that things like humidity won’t really affect them, that’s not always true when it comes to temperatures. Consider the following if you’re not convinced:

  • Deep freezing temperatures can cause beverages to freeze. When they do so, their contents will expand. This can lead to broken bottles, busted cans, and other damage that will mean a shipment is ruined.
  • Heat and cold can both negatively impact the quality of shipped beverages, too. For example, temperature fluctuations in beer can cause the beer to ‘skunk’, leading to poor taste and loss of carbonation. Freezing can do the same, and even soft drinks are affected by this issue. In the case of fruit juice, spoilage can occur.
  • A shipment will move through a variety of temperatures on its way to the retail level, passing through different climates as well as moving through different times of day – with night being cooler, obviously. These temperature changes occur constantly and it’s vital to deal with them before they become an issue.

While a refrigerated shipping trailer or truck is often the first thought when it comes to shipping beverages, the fact is that you can get similar results for much less just by opting to use a good passive temperature control solution. Items like our Insulating Cargo Blankets, for example, offer thermal control that you don’t have to invest heavily in.

Passive temperature control blankets are essentially heavy-duty insulators. They are placed over the shipment and once situated correctly will lock the exterior temps out and keep the temperature of the shipment constant. This helps prevent any kind of damage from occurring.

Additionally, since the blankets are 100% reusable, your initial investment goes much farther than it normally would. There are no working parts to break down, and you can expect to get at least ten years of use from each blanket. Simply put, if you’re in the process of shipping any kind of beverages – or other perishables – controlling temperatures with our passive solutions is well worth doing and should help you keep your losses low, your reputation solid, and your profits high.
