Downsizing in a Growing Freight Economy

By December 5, 2017 No Comments

The shipping industry is rapidly growing, as suppliers are constantly searching for new ways to meet users’ real-time demand for products. In the U.S. alone, the linear shipping industry is valued at over $430 billion. But the drive to meet customers’ demand has led to an interesting phenomenon. Shipping carriers are downsizing and getting more specific with their shipments.

FedEx

FedEx recently purchased 50 Cessna SkyCourier 408 aircraft in an effort to upgrade feeder aircraft fleet. The move upgrades FedEx’s fleet of more than 300 feeder aircraft and comes with the option to purchase 50 more aircraft at a later date.

These smaller aircraft cannot carry large loads, but they can quickly transport smaller, highly targeted shipments. In modernizing their fleet, FedEx seeks to cut costs and reduce emission intensity.
It will be interesting to see how much more FedEx expands their fleet, and if other companies follow suit. If they do, it could transform the shipping industry and could have a major effect on sensitive shipments like pharmaceuticals. A highly specific drug could now be shipped much quicker and cheaper than before.

Smaller Pallets

Pallet sizes are expected to change as shipments become more targeted. Manufacturers have already begun creating smaller pallets that are sustainable. New pallet designs are reusable and repairable. They also incorporate technology to help streamline the supply chain process.

Smaller pallets will allow suppliers to enhance temperature regulations for shipments. Pallet temperatures can be controlled to a range of a few degrees. Smaller pallets will further increase the need for products like SureTemp’s Thermal Pallet Covers. These pallet covers are lightweight, which will cut shipping costs. They have been proved to block radiation, convection, and conduction.

Highly targeted shipments with varied temperature ranges can be shipped on small pallets next to each other with no negative effects. SureTemp’s Pallet Covers can help one pallet stay warm while another stays cold if need be.
