The Heavy Cost Of Poor Temperature Control

By June 21, 2016 No Comments

Shippers have to deal with a lot of different issues. Problems involving the basic logistics of shipping can be confusing and complicated, but one thing that can’t be overlooked is the management of temperature for your shipments.

Most shippers don’t give this enough attention, however, or they underestimate the ease with which a shipment can be destroyed through heat related issues. Just a small length of time exposed to the sun or to high heat can lead to serious problems for a wide range of different products including:

  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Food and Beverages
  • Alcohol
  • Electronics
  • Cosmetics
  • And more

And it’s not just in the back of a shipping container or trailer that your products are exposed – just being left on a tarmac for a short period of time can lead to big problems. Consider some of the ways that poor temperature control can hurt your bottom line and you’ll see how important this is:

  • Replacement of the shipment is the obvious and immediate cost. You’ll have to replace the damaged products, and you’ll end up doing so out of pocket. This negates any of the money you actually earned from your order.
  • Managing the returned shipment that has been damaged means increased labor, more logistics, and reverse shipping costs. Even if you end up trashing the entire shipment, you’ll still end up losing more money here.
  • A single damaged shipment can have a big impact on your reputation and relationship with the group that ordered it. And when it happens more than once, you’ll begin to get associated with poor shipment quality. That in turn can lead to decreased sales since people will be afraid to order from you.

While climate controlled shipping containers or trucks have been used for years, they only solve part of the problem. If they fail in transit, what happens to your shipment? And what about when your products are left on a tarmac or in the sun during a trailer transfer? Using a Thermal Pallet Cover or blanket is the easy answer.

Passive thermal control products like a thermal pallet cover lets you keep your LTL and Air shipments safe. They’ll maintain cold chain by reflecting sunlight and reducing temperature transfer, even if the product is left in the sun for hours. And they work during the wintertime as well to help prevent freezing, giving you an option that works around the year no matter the situation.
