Passive Pallet Covers Are Perfect For Storage Needs

With the uncertainties that surround logistics today, especially with questions of whether shipments will still have scheduled vessels to pick them up, unpredictability is now just the way things are for the industry. For people who still need to ship things, this uncertainty can translate into unexpected delays as schedules no longer work out.

This is one of the key reasons why thermal quilt insulation can be critical for shipments, particularly for any cargo that is temperature-sensitive. It’s a valuable safeguard against the uncertainty of protecting freight when things go wrong and products need to be temporarily stored instead of moving on to the next link in cold chain logistics.

Reefer Units Won’t Always Be There

One of the most common forms of protection for temperature-sensitive products during transportation is the “reefer unit,” which is really just a cargo container or other storage mechanism equipped with a refrigerator to set and then maintain specific shipping temperatures. However, this is a powered solution that requires electricity, which means cargo loses this protection the moment they are removed from a reefer unit to await transfer for the next leg of the journey.

If there is a delay, especially one that requires freight to be stored in a warehouse for several days, a lack of temperature regulation from a reefer unit can be devastating. Thermal quilt insulation can be an essential safeguard against this. Unlike reefer units, which require constant electrical power, thermal quilt insulation relies on protective layers and even reflective surfaces to repel heat, deflect sunlight, and maintain the original shipping temperature with which a product was packaged.

The end result, even on something as exposed as runway tarmac on a hot day, is that there is only a minor variance of temperature in a product. This level of protection against temperature changes can, depending on the conditions, last hours or even days.

In a situation where cargo may have to wait out a delay and is temporarily diverted to a warehouse, there may be no refrigeration facilities available. Temperature-sensitive products protected by thermal quilt insulation may be able to wait out the duration of a delay with no dramatic temperature change, even if the warehouse itself has no climate control. In uncertain financial times when losses can have a much greater impact, this is one more precaution to help prevent that.
