Shipping temperature-sensitive products requires businesses to take extra precautions if they want goods such as produce, wine, or even pharmaceuticals to arrive at their destinations in viable condition. While reefer units are useful for this, passive pallet covers provide essential protection in situations where reefer units aren’t present. However, pallet covers themselves can have their performance enhanced with other additions, and a pallet base is one of them.

Under normal circumstances, shipping temperature-sensitive products without any kind of temperature regulation means that the cargo’s temperature will vary wildly depending on the environment it finds itself in and the time of year. This can mean sweltering on a tarmac awaiting transfer to a plane, or storage in an unheated warehouse for days during the winter.
Reefer units in cargo containers or transport vehicles use electricity and climate control to maintain a specified temperature. However, outside of this environment, passive pallet covers are the ultimate precaution. These insulated liners maintain the original shipping temperature of a product for hours or even days, depending on the situation.
However, passive pallet covers are applied to cargo from the top and the sides. This means that the bottom, resting directly on the pallet itself, doesn’t necessarily benefit from the same insulation and protection. Depending on the circumstances, this means that moisture and heat exchange can occur from the bottom of the freight. This doesn’t mean that it negates the considerable protection provided by insulated coverage from the top and all sides, but it does mean that the time it takes for temperature change to occur can be reduced.
Covers Make The Difference
A pallet base adds a final layer of protection to temperature-sensitive products by ensuring zero contact between the product and the outside environment. Because pallets are typically made of wood, they are far more susceptible to environmental changes, such as rain. A moist pallet can eventually transfer that moisture and temperature variance to the freight that is making contact with it.
With a pallet base, the insulated protection pallet covers provide now extend to the sizable area under the product itself. As this is usually the only part of freight that is in constant, direct contact with another object, it is also the most vulnerable to temperature-transference as a result of that contact. Pallet bases eliminate even this vulnerability.
